Marathon des Sables - MdS

Known as 'The Toughest Foot Race on Earth', this was my first desert race.  And I loved it!

The MdS is a 7-day stage race covering approx. 250km in the Sahara, Morocco.  There's always a marathon stage and a 50-miler, but the last day tends to be short (half marathon).  Competitors carry all their food, equipment and clothing for the duration of the event; water is provided, as is a 'tent' which is home to you and seven others.  The tent is basically a large bit of cloth held up with a couple of poles - which come dowm a lot in sandstorms.  Weather is typically hot in late March, although in 2009 there were massive floods and competitors had to be taken out from the (wet) desert.  That's climate change for you.

This sort of event requires so much more than the ability to run.  Physical, mental and emotional endurance is all drawn upon, as well as a strong back to carry your pack and good admin skills - you've got to be organised, have the right kit and be well prepared in all aspects.

The MdS is a very social race - it's good to run with people from so many different countries and you'll come away with many friends.  I was lucky enough to share Tent 66  and I'm still in touch with them today.

It's the Ultra that most people want to do, and it's certainly a challenge.  Yes, it's big and pretty commercial but it's very well organised, the atmosphere is great and there's nothing like the feeling when they put that medal around your neck.
