Trans-MTB stage race

BACK in the Nineties, the Transalp kickstarted one of mountain-biking's "must do" crazes - the multi-day mountainbike stage race.   At eight days, 600km and with 19,000 metres of climbing - plus some of the best biking trails in Germany, Austria and Italy to enjoy - the original euro-Transalp set a high standard for other events to follow.    My brother Steve and I clocked up a couple of Transalp finishes, managing to crack the top 50 each time, but with some serious suffering (always mine!) involved along the way.  The climbs are long, the heat incredible, the views staggering - and the sense of satisfaction at finishing, well... satisfying!    Since then, we've also competed in the Trans-Poland and Trans-Wales editions, and have an eye on the Trans-Rockies.  Steve's long since ditched his slower brother to record overall wins in both events.

At all Trans evens, the logistics are pretty simple; racers are given a large holdall for riding kit, sleeping bag, sleeping mat etc etc - in fact, everything needed for multiple racing days - and the organisers transport it from stage to stage.  At each finish, accommodation is provided in school sports halls, village community centres etc, and canteens serve dinner and then breakfast the following morning.  Each night, there's a podium presentation to the day's winners and category leaders, and a video and photos are screened of the day's action.

Highly recommended!
