This is a really useful add-on to a bum-bag or day-pack belt, ensuring you have easy access to vital stuff like trail snacks etc.  Eating little and often is essential on long runs and races, and if you have to keep taking a rucksack on or off to get access to food, the temptation is to just keep on running - and not eat!
