Amanda: Although it might seem bulky, just strap it to the outside of your pack when running. It's easier/quicker to get to and means you've got something to sit on while you sort out feet/socks/shoes etc in the morning. Really helpful at the MdS when they dismantle the tents around you...!
Andy: this is my choice of mat to use in cold weather races like the Yukon Arctic Ultra. It's a good insulator on the snow, and being able to just concertina it back together and stash it on a sled is a big plus when it's -35C! No messing around - just fold it up and you're off.
